Quick answer: How to choose a digital marketing agency comes down to four checks. Confirm the company legally exists, find out who will actually do your work rather than who is on the sales call, get ownership of your accounts in writing, and ask them when their service would be the wrong fit. An agency that cannot answer the last one is selling, not advising.
We are a digital marketing agency. So read this knowing that, and hold it to the same standard it asks you to hold everyone else to.
Most guides on this topic are written for businesses in the US or UK, where an agency is a registered company with an office you could visit and a contract your lawyer would recognise. The advice is reasonable there. It misses almost everything that actually goes wrong in Pakistan.
Here the common failure is not a bad strategy. It is an agency that turned out to be one person with a laptop, a portfolio of screenshots belonging to someone else, and a WhatsApp number that stops replying two months after the advance clears.
This guide covers the checks that matter here.
Before You Talk to Anyone, Know What You Are Buying
How to choose a digital marketing agency starts before you speak to one. Half of bad agency relationships fail because the business never decided what it wanted.
“Digital marketing” covers SEO, paid ads, social media, content, video, email, and web development. Almost nobody is genuinely good at all of them. An agency excellent at running ads is often mediocre at content, and vice versa.
So write down three things first.
What outcome you need. Not “more visibility.” More enquiries, more walk-ins, more orders. Pick one.
What you can measure. If you cannot currently count how many enquiries you get in a month, fix that before you hire anyone, or you will never know whether the money worked.
What a customer is worth to you. Without this, no agency can tell you what a sensible budget looks like, and you cannot tell whether their results are good.
Turn up to a sales call with those three answers and the conversation changes completely. You stop being pitched and start being consulted.
How Do You Check an Agency Actually Exists?
This step does not appear in any international guide because there it is assumed. Here it is the single highest-value check you can run, and it takes fifteen minutes.

Look them up on the company register. SECP maintains the register of companies in Pakistan. Not every legitimate small agency is a registered company, and a sole proprietor can do excellent work. But you should know which one you are dealing with before you send an advance, not after.
Ask for a physical address and then look at it. On a map, on street view, or by visiting if they are in your city. An agency in Rawalpindi or Islamabad claiming a team of twenty should have somewhere that team sits.
Ask to meet the people who will do the work. Not the founder. The editor, the writer, the person running your ads. A video call is enough. If everyone is permanently unavailable, they are probably freelancers who have not been briefed yet.
Check the portfolio belongs to them. Ask which specific parts of a showcased project they did. Reused screenshots are common enough that asking is not rude, and a real agency answers immediately.
Get a client reference and call it. A written testimonial on a website costs nothing to produce. A phone number does not.
Who Will Actually Do the Work?
This is the question that separates agencies from middlemen, and the answer is often uncomfortable.
Many agencies in Rawalpindi and Islamabad sell SEO, web, and social media. When a client asks for video, the work goes out to a freelancer the agency found the week before. You never meet that person, the agency marks up their invoice, and the quality is whatever that freelancer happened to deliver.
The tell is in how they answer process questions.
Ask what a shoot day looks like. An agency that films will describe it without pausing: who arrives, what equipment comes, how many videos get made in a day, where the editing happens. An agency that subcontracts will change the subject to strategy and deliverables.
Ask the same about content. Who writes it? Do they write in your industry already? Can you see something they wrote this month, not two years ago?
Ask how many accounts the person on your account handles. A good answer is a specific number. A vague answer means too many.
None of this requires you to understand marketing. It requires you to notice whether someone can describe their own work in detail.
If video is the channel you are weighing up, YouTube marketing for small business in Pakistan covers what it actually involves before you brief anyone.
What Should Be in Writing Before You Pay?
Advance payment with nothing in writing is normal in Pakistan and it is where most of the money gets lost.

Who owns the accounts. Your Google Business Profile, ad account, website, hosting, domain, and social pages must be in your name with you as owner. The agency gets access, not ownership. This is the single most expensive thing to get wrong, because recovering a domain or an ad account later is slow and sometimes impossible.
What is delivered each month. Specific quantities. Four videos, eight posts, two blogs, one report. Not “content as required.”
What happens if it is not working. At 90 days, what changes? A real agency has an answer.
How you exit. Notice period, what you take with you, and how handover happens. Ask this before signing, not when you are already unhappy.
Reporting. What you receive, how often, and whether you get direct access to the dashboards rather than a screenshot.
Backlinko’s guide to choosing a marketing agency covers the international version of these questions well, and most of it applies here too.
Red Flags Specific to Pakistan
Every international guide on how to choose a digital marketing agency lists the same warnings: guarantees, vague pricing, long contracts. Those apply here too. Beyond them, watch for these.
Everything happens on WhatsApp and nothing is documented. WhatsApp is fine for speed. It is not fine as the only record of what you agreed.
A large advance before any work, with no contract. Some advance is normal. All of it, with nothing in writing, is not.
Prices far below everyone else. Somebody is being paid very little to do your work, and it will show.
No questions about your business on the first call. If they pitch for forty minutes without asking who your customers are, that is a sales call wearing a strategy costume.
Results promised in weeks for channels that take months. Anyone promising SEO results in three weeks is either inexperienced or hoping you will not check.
They cannot show their own results. An agency whose own website does not rank and whose own social accounts are dead is asking you to buy something they have not bought themselves.
Their own work does not load properly on a phone. Open two or three sites they built on a mid-range Android on mobile data, not on your laptop. That is the device almost all of your customers will use. An agency that has not tested its own portfolio on a normal Pakistani phone will not test yours either.
When You Should Not Hire an Agency at All
Sometimes the honest answer is that you do not need us, or anyone like us.
Your Google listing is empty. If you run a shop, salon, clinic, or showroom and your Google Business Profile is half-finished, that is free, it produces calls within weeks, and you can do it yourself. Start with GMB optimization and how to add business on Google Maps. Hiring an agency while that sits empty is paying for something you could have had free.
Nobody in your business will own the relationship. An agency needs decisions, approvals, and access. If nobody has an hour a week to give it, the engagement will fail regardless of who you hire.
You cannot answer WhatsApp quickly. Every channel we could build for you ends in a message. If those go unanswered for a day, more of them will not help.
You need customers this month to survive. Agency engagements take time to build. If the business is in immediate trouble, that is a different conversation and most of what agencies sell will not arrive fast enough.
Your budget only covers three months. Most channels have not proven themselves by month three. Starting something you cannot fund through month six usually means paying for the slow part and quitting before the payoff.
What Should the First 90 Days Look Like?
Ask any agency for this breakdown. It is the most useful single question in how to choose a digital marketing agency, because the ones with a real process can answer immediately and the ones without will improvise.

Weeks 1 to 2. Access, audit, and measurement. They should be fixing how enquiries are tracked before they start generating them.
Weeks 3 to 6. First output published, and the first honest conversation about what is not working.
Weeks 7 to 12. Enough data to see a pattern, and a plan that has changed based on it. An agency running the exact plan it proposed in week one has not been paying attention.
And the honest timeline by channel, which is worth having in mind before anyone promises you anything:
| Channel | First meaningful result |
|---|---|
| Paid ads | First week |
| Google Business Profile | 4 to 8 weeks |
| SEO, YouTube, content | 3 to 6 months |
What Does It Cost?
We do not publish rates, and you should be cautious of anyone who does without asking about your business first.
What price actually depends on:
Scope. How many channels, how many deliverables a month.
Whether production is included. Video shooting costs more than editing footage you supply. Writing costs more than editing your drafts.
Seniority. A senior strategist and a junior coordinator do not cost the same and do not produce the same result. This is the variable agencies hide most often.
Reporting depth. Monthly summary versus dashboard access and regular review calls.
A proposal that arrives before anyone has asked what a customer is worth to you was written for someone else and had your name pasted on it.
FAQs
Should I hire a local agency or one in another city?
Location matters less than it used to, except for anything requiring filming or in-person work. If video is part of the plan, a local team is meaningfully easier. For SEO and ads, judge on process and communication rather than distance.
Is a bigger agency safer?
Not usually for a small business. Large agencies often assign smaller accounts to junior staff working from a standard playbook, and the senior person from the sales call never touches your work again. Ask who handles your account and how many others they handle.
How do I know if the agency is actually working?
You should have direct access to the dashboards, not screenshots. Google Business Profile insights, ad accounts, and analytics can all be shared with you as owner. If access is refused, that tells you something.
What if I have already paid an agency and got nothing?
First, secure your accounts. Get ownership of your domain, hosting, ad account, and Google Business Profile back into your own name before anything else. Recovering those is harder the longer you wait, and it matters more than recovering the fee.
Working With Unity Films
We shoot, edit, and publish in-house. When we describe a shoot day, it is because our own team turns up and does it, and the person editing has seen the footage being filmed. Our digital marketing services are built around that rather than around finding a freelancer after you sign.
Now the part this guide obliges us to write. We are not the right fit if you need results inside a month, if your budget only stretches to a few months, or if nobody on your side can give the work an hour a week. We will tell you that on the first call rather than after the advance.
If you want an honest read on whether your business needs an agency at all, send us your website and your city.
Final Thoughts
Knowing how to choose a digital marketing agency is mostly about knowing which questions produce uncomfortable answers.
Who does the work. What happens at 90 days if it fails. What you keep when you leave. When would your service be wrong for us.
An agency that answers those four clearly is worth talking to further, whether or not it is this one. An agency that gets vague on any of them has already told you what working with them will be like.
